An’an stood in front of the basin and she made a turn. She had silken hair, a beautiful face and her dress was making some waves by her slim calves. She was simply charming, like a delicate water lotus.

He would come, right?

When was he coming?

He would be here soon, right?

She hadn’t seen him in a very long time.

She missed him so much.

An’an sat beside her bed, her heart thumped wildly. Her lips were formed into a pout and she seemed to be aggrieved. He hadn’t even paid her a visit at the hospital yet.

Perhaps, he’s been too busy recently.

She hadn’t phoned him in the past few days as her elder brother confiscated her cell phone. Gu Mohan had made himself clear, he liked girls who were obedient and so she decided to be good and listen to him.

An’an stood up and walked towards the pharmacy in the hospital.

The nurse stationed at the pharmacy asked, “Miss An’an, what medicine are you looking for?”

An’an scanned around the entire pharmacy, her gaze eventually landing on one of the shelves. She pointed at it with one slender finger. “I want one box of that.”

The nurse looked over, An’an was pointing at a box of condoms.

An’an’s face was blushing red by the time she returned back to her ward. She hid the box of condoms under her pillow like a sneaky thief.

Mmm, it was so embarrassing.

The nursed had asked her earlier on, “Miss An’an, which size would you like?”

Thinking back, she had stammered, “The largest size.”

The nurse’s first reaction was to gape at An’an.

An’an quickly covered her face with her hands, mm, her face was burning hot.

So embarrassing!

Knock knock knock, someone was knocking on the door.

Was it Lu Yan?

It must be Lu Yan!

An’an hurriedly got up from the bed and ran over to open the door.

But she was disappointed the next moment, it wasn’t Lu Yan standing outside the door but Butler Ye instead.

“Hello, Miss An’an.” Butler Ye greeted her respectfully.

“Hello, Butler Ye.” An’an responded and looked behind him with her usual cold gaze. She even stuck her head out to check the corridors.

There wasn’t anyone else.

Lu Yan hadn’t come.

“Miss An’an, are you looking for Master Yan? Master Yan has something important he must attend to, so he sent me here on his behalf.”

“Oh, is that so. Please come in then, Butler Ye.”

In the hospital ward, An’an sat by her bed and Butler Ye handed something over into An’an’s hands. “Miss An’an, this is Master Yan’s wedding invitation.”

Lu Yan’s wedding invitation...?

His words seared into An’an’s mind, she lowered her lashes and looked at the gilded red invitation card. It was written, the groom Lu Yan and bride....An Xi.

Within moments, she clenched onto the wedding invitation tightly, the card was totally crumpled. She dug her fingernails deep into her palms.

The color on An’an’s face instantly drained away, turning pale like a sheet of white paper. The efforts she spent on rehabilitating seemed to have gone to utter waste.

She lifted her head, looking at Butler Ye dazedly. It was only after a good ten minutes later, she spoke up. “W-Why?”

“Miss An’an, Master Yan and An Xi have a longtime friendship formed since childhood. Now that they’re finally getting married, we would like to invite Miss An’an to attend the wedding.”

“No, no...” An’an shook her head in denial and muttered, “I’m not asking about that...”

She wanted to ask, why did he marry An Xi?

It shouldn’t turn out like that.

He would never treat her in such a way.

Butler Ye watched as An’an was dumbfounded at the news and continued, “Miss An’an, Master Yan wanted me to convey this on his behalf, he doesn’t mind playing around with you but he’d never get serious with you. You’re born with leukemia, if you’re going to give birth to his child, you might pass it down to the child, it’s in your genes. Now that Master Yan is getting married, he is going to be loyal to one woman, and that would be his wife. He hopes that Miss An’an will have the decency to not pester him ever again.”

It seemed as though An’an had not heard Butler Ye’s words clearly, but at the same time, she also seemed to have understood.

He said he was only playing around with her.

He said she was born with leukemia and he didn’t dare to have any children with her.

He said he would only have one woman in his life and that was his wife.

He said to never pester him again.

An’an didn’t even realize that Butler Ye had left. She sat on her bed, she felt as though she was forcibly pushed into an abyss. Her limbs went icy cold.

She had never foreseen their ending to turn out like that, for him to be the one to stab her in the heart.

It hurt.

Curling up into a ball, she stared out with listless eyes, but never shed a single tear.

...

After An’an was discharged from the hospital, she was very obedient in the days after. She ate all of her meals well, she went to sleep on time and even returned to school. She had thrown the gilded wedding invitation into the trash can and the name ‘Lu Yan’ was totally out of her life.

But something had changed, she had become extremely quiet.

Tang Mo’er would always see her sitting on the carpet, hugging her knees. She would always face the windows and look outside. But Tang Mo’er could not figure out what exactly she was looking at. What was on her mind?

An’an would always just go into a daze, it would last an entire afternoon.

She still wasn’t a fan of making friends with other people but with her ethereal beauty, she had attracted the attention of countless rich heirs from distinguished families.

Two months later, An’an participated in a dance competition and she won first prize.

The entire Capital’s socialite circle had begun to notice her. Many of those madams of those wealthy families had begun to try to find out more about An’an, they wanted to know if she was already taken by anyone.

One night, An’an had returned to the villa and fell into Tang Mo’er’s arms. It wasn’t hard to notice the smell of alcohol all over her. “An’an, you went drinking?”

Lowering her eyes, An’an answered beseechingly, “Mmm, I had... two drinks with my classmates, little sister-in-law, please don’t be angry...”

Tang Mo’er ruffled An’an’s silken hair and let out a hidden sigh. She wasn’t angry, it was more that she felt heartbroken instead.

The television in the living room was broadcasting news, the anchorman reported with fluent chinese—-

We’ve just received the latest news, Lu Yan, the overlord of all piers in the Capital, the powerful Master Yan was involved in a shootout yesterday night while on bail. Unfortunately, a bullet passed through his chest. The paramedics on site have announced his death on the spot...

Lu Yan died.

Lu Yan was never a part of the world anymore.

Tang Mo’er’s pupils dilated with horror, she lowered her head to look at An’an, who was still in her arms.

An’an’s hair was scattered around messily, covering her tiny face. She still seemed to be drunk but she instantly got up from Tang Mo’er’s arms after she retracted her gaze from the television. “Little sister-in-law, I’m returning... to my room.”

An’an staggered up the stairs and returned to her own room.

When Tang Mo’er was done cooking An’an a bowl of hangover soup, she went upstairs and brought it in front of An’an’s door. “An’an.”

There was no reply.

An’an didn’t respond at all.

Knock knock, Tang Mo’er lifted her hand and knocked on the door again, but there wasn’t a sound.

Tang Mo’er suddenly had an ominous feeling, and her heart sank.

She could sense that something bad had happened.

Without giving it a second thought, she placed her hand on the doorknob and pulled on it, pushing the room door open.

The room was filled with the heavy stench of blood. In the middle of the bed, An’an was lying with her wrist just dangling off the bed mid-air. There was a huge slit of red blood streaming down onto the sheets. It was bleeding profusely.

The 18 year old An’an had committed suicide in her room.

The wind chime that was hung on top of her bed rang when a gust of cold wind rushed in from the open window. It sounded so joyous, forming a stark contrast with the tragic happenings in the room.
