Chapter 75 Work Hard

The meal was had in a strange atmosphere.

In a bad mood, Jeffrey left with Emily right after breakfast.

Betty finished the bird’s nest and then left with Kerwin.

In a good mood, Old Bruce claimed that he would go for a walk and saw them out.

Kerwin’s wheelchair slid into the car. Just as Betty was about to follow behind him, Old Bruce pulled her.

“Betty,” he said with a cryptical look. “You did a good job yesterday, but I can tell you from my experience that the odds of one-shot success are slim. You should continue to work hard at home.”

Betty froze for a moment, realized what he

meant, and blushed.

Seriously?

She promised to comply and hurried to the

car.

Finally, she passed through the banquet without a hitch.

As the deadline for the latest issue of the

magazine was drawing near, everyone was

frantic in the office.

Even Jeffrey had no time to find faults with Betty. He was also focusing on his work.

Since their partnership with Houston went south, their funds had been running short. They were going through the biggest crisis since the establishment of the magazine. Fortunately, the second interview with Kerwin came in time and brought them to a new high in sales. They were able to recover a little.

Still, the shortfall was there. Kerwin could save them once, but they had to rely on themselves this time. Once again, everyone had a headache coming up with ideas for the latest issue.

Lydia was active this Ellie. Sie MILLI DI substandard food processing plant and recorded the scene behind the curtain with a pinhole camera.

Recently, food safety had drawn a lot of attention in the country. Everyone was convinced that this topic would cause a sensation. They worked overtime, intending to dig up everything about the terrible

factory.

As a member of the magazine, Betty also worked overtime even though she was not in charge of the story.

Betty worked late on typesetting in the office. Swollen with pride, Lydia came over, threw a file on her desk, and said, “Betty, this is the record of the workers in that factory. Many of them don’t have relevant licenses. Help me do a statistical analysis.”

Betty had got too much on her plate. Lydia’s request made her frown. “Lydia, my hands are full. Can you do it on your own?”

“What?” Lydia’s eyes rounded as if she heard

a joke. “Don’t you know how busy I am? You see, I did the interview on my own! The work of sorting out files alone is heavy. Do you want me to handle these minutiae too?”

Betty furrowed her brows and explained, “I’ve got a lot on my plate too. Why don’t

you…”

Irritated by that, Lydia cut her short. “Betty, I know that you have a patron, but don’t get cocky. You can’t idol around all day just because the editor-in-chief is partial to

you.”

Lydia rasped and raised her voice. People’s attention was drawn in an instant.

Betty’s face fell.

She took a deep breath, picked up the file, and said in a bland tone, “Okay, I’ll help.”

With a complacent look on her face, Lydia intended to brag, but Betty spoke again in an unhurried way.

“But please don’t flatter yourself as the

benefactor to the magazine just because you did an interview. This is your first case after

you were employed Iwo years ago, remember?”

Betty’s words were mean, but she was telling the truth.

Lydia and she joined the magazine at the same time. One year ago, she was capable of handling cases on her own while Lydia could only do odd jobs like proofreading.

“How dare you…” Lydia’s face turned ashen as she hadn’t expected Betty to counter. Embarrassed by the snickers from all around, she gnashed her teeth and left in a huff.

As soon as the woman left, Sarah slid over in her chair and gave Betty a thumbs up. “That was awesome! I’ve found Lydia annoying in the past few days. It’s just an interview, but she has her nose in the air.”

Betty smiled with no comment and started to process the file from Lydia.

As soon as she got her hands on it, her brows were locked in a frown.

This factory was horrible. Most of its employees were farmers from other cities. They didn’t have much knowledge and worked like slaves.

She hesitated for a moment and asked, “What will happen to these workers after we expose the illegal practice of the factory?”

“Out of work.” Sarah shrugged. “I’m in charge of investigating the financial conditions of the factory. Recently, they’ve received a lot of major orders, and their funds are falling short. It seems they haven’t paid the employees for a long time. If we expose them, these deals will probably go to waste, and the workers can quit thinking about their wages.”

Although Betty sympathized with them, she knew that she would be sorry for the consumers if the food manufactured by the plant circulated in the market. Therefore, she stopped talking and continued with her

work.

At around 11 o’clock, Betty started to have stomach cramps.

She rubbed her stomach and frowned.

She had stomach problems. Whenever she was hungry, her stomach would ache. She only had some cookies for dinner and now started to suffer.

At such late hours, the store downstairs was closed. She had to go to the pantry and see if there was anything to eat in the fridge,

Unfortunately, the snacks in the fridge had been eaten since so many people worked late

today.

Without a choice, Betty put a glass of milk in

the oven.

While she was sipping the milk, footsteps were heard coming from behind her.

She turned around. It was the last person she wanted to see.

Jeffrey Martin…

Jeffrey was holding a lunch box in his hand. Apparently, he came to the pantry to reheat the food in the oven. He was surprised to run into Betty

Betty’s face turned cold in an instant. She turned to leave, but Jeffrey called out.

“Betty!”

Betty continued her way outside until her wrist was grabbed. She turned around, only to see Jeffrey’s angry face.

“Betty,” Jeffrey sulked. “Didn’t you hear me?”
