Chapter 220: Ethically Deranged to Represent Him
"I have already reviewed the evidence, Mrs. Bai. Bai Ye Qing indeed attacked Mr. Bai two nights ago. Moreover, he is also suspected to have murdered Bai Wenxi. In these circumstances, I would be ethically deranged to represent Mr. Bai Ye Qing." He took a cleansing breath. "As for you, your involvement has been deemed obstruction of a criminal investigation and you have been deemed an accomplice in these crimes. Therefore, I will not be able to represent you either."
Chen Yue gasped. "Did you do this? Are you making this happen while Bai Yu is still lying in the hospital bed? Have you no shame or humanity?"
Yun Qian Meng scoffed. "Mr. Bai sent me here to ensure that his words were relayed word by word. I have no hand in this matter, I am acting as the executor of his demands," she said casually.
"What a crock of lies. That man won't be this harsh!" Chen Yue demanded.
"Hasn't he always been this way? Upholding his high ideals and not caring about his own flesh and blood?" Bai Ye Qing prompted from the side, fuelling the fire.
Chen Yue grumbled some more before the lawyer cleared his throat. "I can only advise you on this: please take the police's offer and meet a state-appointed defense attorney."
"Why would we do that when we have money to hire someone? Even if it's not you, we have Jiang Hanyu to represent us," Bai Ye Qing commented. He was shaking his foot in irritation. He had never expected the uptight lawyer to represent them anyways, but he had gone along with his mother in an attempt to exhaust her hopes.
If she didn't have any hopes for their father, she would take Bai Ye Qing's side unconditionally.
Li Jun cleared his throat, interrupting Mr. Bai's lawyer who was about to speak. "As per my knowledge, Jiang Hanyu is a newly employed lawyer. Most people of his experience never see the face of the court or get to be the primary defense lawyer in the case." And then a wicked grin spread on his face. "Moreover, his company issued a statement yesterday discrediting him and saying that he has been using company property fraudulently."
"Fraudulently?" Bai Ye Qing asked.
"Hanyu is an intelligent child. He would never—"
"He was fired from his job. It's a public statement so I don't think he will ever get a reputable job in a firm ever again. He might get employed in a seedy firm that represents petty and dirty criminals. You could try that route," Li Jun said calmly.
Bai Ye Qing leaned forward, ready to pounce but the restraints held him back.
Qian Meng was enjoying this legal act a lot.
"Then what do you want us to do?" Bai Ye Qing seethed. "It is my constitutional right to get a lawyer to defend me from false claims," he said vehemently.
Li Jun looked at him. He wondered if his man really believed what he was saying. He hoped not, because then he could get away with some sort of psychological analysis.
And Li Jun would have fun taking down every angle they had.
"Well, as you said, you have the right to legal counsel. And a public defender will do that for you. They have years of experience under the belt," Li Jun smiled.
"But they have so many cases… they will never give us importance like a paid lawyer will," Chen Yue said, a note of hysteria.
"Sure, if you can afford a lawyer," Li Jun said quickly.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Bai Ye Qing asked, his eyes bouncing from one person to the next.
"Mr. Bai made a change to his will shortly before the attack. As per his wishes and the regulations, I am obligated to tell you that you will receive no money from Mr. Bai this moment forward," he said calmly.
He unrolled the paper and calmly placed a copy in front of the mother and son.
Chen Yue frowned and Bai Ye Qing scanned over it.
"He changed his will? He never told me about this? How can I be sure you didn't forge this?" Bai Ye Qing asked calmly.
Chen Yue nodded. "He was not in a state to change the will."
These shameless people. They could say that he too injured to change the will but still deny it was because of what they did. How did such people even sleep at night?
"He changed a will before that," the lawyer said firmly. "I have an executed copy of it with me. I am only showing you the copy right now," he said blandly. He didn't trust them to bring out the real copy.
"What does it imply?" Bai Ye Qing asked calmly. Chen Yue was already hyperventilating.
"Mr. Bai put in a clause that disbars both of you from getting a share of his money in case you are convicted of a felony. As we can see, because of the seriousness of the charges and the evidence we have already seen, Mr. Bai will be cutting off monetary channels with both of you," the lawyer said. "Mrs. Bai, the money in your personal bank account will remain but no further payments will be made. As for Mr. Bai Ye Qing, he will receive no monetary reprieve. Any and all debts incurred by him will be settled only by him and have no effect on Mr. Bai."
Qian Meng hadn't known the extent that the new will went to. By this, he had effectively cut ties with his family without canceling them out of the family registry. It was a bold move to make and she couldn't help but feel sorry.
Sorry that Uncle Bai was going through such immense pain. He had lost his eldest son to a violent death. His younger son was soon going to jail for murder and a long rap sheet of things and his wife was enabling the son.
