Global Awakening: Monster Taming Necromancer

Chapter 91: Captain Ryker

Chapter 91: Captain Ryker

He ate breakfast with Temur. It was a silent affair where they are both lost in their thoughts, even the big guy didn't show any excitement for the food.

The curtain to the tent opened, and Cele walked in; she was dressed in a white and red robe with her hair still wet from her recent bath. "I see you wake early. Good morning!"

They mumbled their greetings as they watched her take her seat; she set a cup and jug in front of herself and served tea. She took a sip and looked up to Jael and Temur staring at her. "You want to know the news I have."

They didn't reply, there was no need to when she knew why they waited so. "I've talked to Captain Ryker and explained the situation to him. He didn't promise anything but he agreed to talk with you guys."

Jael released a breath he didn't know he was holding; that's better than a flat-out refusal. Honestly, who would they turn to? They are Iron ranks just starting their journey. They do not influence to fall back on.

"Thank you, Cele," Jael said.

"Are we going to meet him now? We're done eating, right, Jael?" Temur asked even with the mountain of meat and vegetables still in front of him.

"Em....he said he's going to send for you. He's busy with all the things that's happened so far. And I heard he's going to the zone to check it out himself. Accompany those who are going to value it and....."

Afternoon that day they were summoned. Jael had tried to sleep after eating, but his dream was twisted, and he felt even more tired. So he was really glad when he and Temur were called.

The Captain's tent was set almost directly in front of the zone and it was constructed like a normal building but smaller. Two guards waved them in when they approached.

Inside was not what Jael was expecting; he thought everything would be neat and tidy, but the room was a roller-coaster chaos of papers. They are everywhere, on tables and chairs, even pinned on the walls. And the room small like freshly printed book.

"Wow..." Jael said. He had to pick his way with Temur over. the stacks of books and piles of papers. "This is...."

"Oh, you're here." A voice said.

It came from the center of the room which was dominated by a large table and chair. Full of papers. "Come on closer," Riker said and shrugged away the papers on his table; everything fell to the ground in a flutter.

Jael winced. 'Aren't they impossible stuff?'

Four chairs faced the table, and he gestured for them to sit. "Captain Ryker..." Jael began but the man raised his hand and brought out a small bell from his drawer.

It produced a small chiming sound followed by a ripple of mana. Captain Ryker nodded in satisfaction and spoke. "Protecting against unwavering ears."

"Even here?" Temur asked.

"Especially here," Ryker gestured to his one-room office. "Here, I might let my guard down and let loose some classified info. Warding against unwanted ears is one of the basic things required from Tower Guards."

Jael looked at the room with skepticism.

Ryker wasn't telling them the whole truth; the reason he was so carefree with all his papers was because the whole tent was one warded thing. Only those he wanted could enter.

"But let's leave that. My....Cele told me about what I already knew. The disappearance of Litha Galadria."

It struck Jael then that it was the first time he would be hearing her full name. But something also seemed weird with what the Captain said, something he couldn't put his hand on...

Temur got it faster than him. "She didn't disappear. She was kidnapped by members of the Chaos Cult."

Ryker looked at them intently. "She disappeared, and we have taken it up as a case of missing person....!!"

Temur slammed his clenched fists into the table with a loud bang, flopping down books and papers. A rough growl tore through him. "She. Was. Kidnapped!"

Jael flinched from the aura that leaked out of Temur but he was more concerned with how Ryker would react. He began to get his Unholy magic and his monsters ready in case of a fight.

But Captain Ryker just chuckled. "Of course, she was kidnapped. Calm yourself, young man. This is the Tower, you must learn how things are done. Only then can you try to move against, or with it."

Temur was breathing hard, and his face hardened with anger, but he knew causing a fuss here would only make finding her harder. So he sat. "I apologize."

"Great," he clapped. "Let's move all. Already, I filled the case as a kidnapped case, but because it was involved with the Chaos Cult, it was taken up by higher administrators. And when I said higher, I meant high.

Ryker shrugged. "When the papers were returned earlier this morning it was sent back as a missing person case. To be frank with you, that only happens when the person has some really strong connection."

"But...it's a criminal case!" Jael was baffled. Why would a kidnapping case be turned down like that just because someone has a strong connection?

Captain Ryker shook his head. "I see you are still new to the realities of the Tower. It'll open your eyes, a little boy. Tell me, Jael. How many people have you killed since you entered the Tower? What about you Temur?"

Jael flinched, and his eyes widened. What is Ryker getting at? How many people...? He didn't know the exact amount or even remember their faces. But he has killed.

Ryker studied their faces. "Yes. That's the first thing the Tower robs you of. Your conscience to things that are not immediately touching you.

"In this Zone claiming how many died? Exactly! I read the report. What I'm getting at is that Litha isn't special. Right now, her death or life is meaningless in the grand scheme of things in this Tower."
