?
He stopped mid-sentence. Then he frowned. Even all the clones paused whatever they were doing to focus on what he just said.
They realized that something was indeed wrong. It is one thing for the realm lord to make an exaggerated warning. But it is another thing for Legion-7 to make an exaggerated warning a few seconds after the realm lord's exaggeration. It couldn't be a coincidence. If it was, then it is odd.
Legion-1 said, "Let's go back to the warning and read the data clip from there. It is the only thing that I can think of that might be the cause of this unease and coincidence."
Legion-7 agreed. "Let's do that. It won't take much of our time anyway. So there's no harm in reading the data clip again."
Legion-3 thought about it and agreed. "I hope that this is just a coincidence."
He had forgotten that he was certain that there was nothing wrong earlier. Now he has changed his tune from being sure to hoping.
But as they read the data clip again, all the memories that they had lost returned in a flood. He knew then that something was very wrong somewhere.
What was wrong became clear when they saw the incomprehensible portions of the data clip again. They realized that this was the third time they were reading the same paragraph. It caused all of them to jump in fright wherever they were.
Legion-1 said with shock, "This is incomprehensible."
Legion-6 asked, "The part of the data clip we don't understand or the fact that we keep forgetting that we don't understand it?"
Legion-2 replied, "This is no time to make a joke."
Legion-6 shrugged and said, "I'm just saying. We have been repeating this again and again. It has to be funny."
Legion-3 asked, "What is funny?"
Legion-1 replied, "The fact that the realm lord thought we wouldn't be able to understand the data clip."
Legion-4 laughed and shook his head. He asked, "What does he take us for? We are not idiots. How is this difficult to understand?"
Legion-9 agreed. "I still don't see what could be difficult to understand about this. It is enlightening, but it isn't difficult. Anyone should be able to understand it."
Legion-2 said with pride, "That just goes to show how much he underestimates us. In time we will make him regret that underestimation."
The clones began another of stroking their egos and patting each other's backs. Again, only Legion-7 felt that something was wrong. He felt as if time had suddenly sped up, leaving them behind.
Legion-1 noticed that he was feeling uneasy, so he asked him, "What are you concerned about?"
Legion-7 replied, "I feel that something is wrong with us."
So the cycle repeated itself. They searched for anomalies thoroughly. But they didn't see anything wrong.
They felt good about themselves. But they listened to Legion-1 and reread the data clip. Then everything came crashing down on their minds.
They were shocked and spooked all over again. But this time Legion-7 managed to write down a note.
He wrote, "We forgot something. It is about..."
But then he forgot what it was. He felt a chill as he asked, "What were we talking about?"
Legion-1 thought about it and said, "Last I remembered, it was about the realm lord's warning."
This made Legion-2 snicker with disdain. "His warning was an exaggeration. A total exaggeration. I can't believe he underestimated us like that."
They began patting each other's backs again, but Legion-7 interrupted them. He pointed at his note and said, "This says we forgot something. It is incomplete, though."
Legion-3 asked, "Who wrote it?"
Legion-7 racked his head. He couldn't remember who wrote it. The handwriting doesn't look remotely close to his. It looks like a madman was scribbling something in panic. By the looks of it, it couldn't have been written by any of them.
Eventually he said, "I don't know who wrote it. But I also don't know how we got it."
Legion-6 shook his head. "It doesn't matter who wrote it. It can't be about us. We can't forget anything. We are immortals."
Legion-3 said with a sinking feeling, "But we did forget how we came into possession of the writing."
Legion-6 became angry when he heard that. He said, "It is almost as absurd to think we could forget about something as it is for the realm lord to believe that we won't be able to understand something and forget it."
He was chuckling when he said that, but he stopped chuckling by the end. He found that the three situations were too odd to be a coincidence.
Legion-5 considered the realm lord's warning again and asked, "Is it truly absurd to consider that we forgot something?"
Legion-7 replied, "I mean the realm lord warned us that we could forget something, we found a note saying we forgot something, and we don't know who wrote the note or how we got it. If anything, it seems reasonable to consider that we forgot something."
Legion-2 suggested with confidence, "Let's settle this by reading the data clip again. I'm sure that there is nothing to worry about."
He was very wrong about that. The weight of the world came crashing down when they read it again. They didn't need air, but they found it difficult to breathe. Their visions began to
swoon.
Fortunately, Legion-7 still had the presence of mind to write in their notes. He did so as soon as they remembered what they had forgotten.
He wrote, "Legion-7 wrote this. You forgot something. It is about..."
He was trying to figure out how to express the incomprehensible things that they couldn't understand, but it slipped from the fingers of his mind, and he forgot again. All the clones forgot too. So the cycle repeated itself.
It was good that the note said Legion-7 wrote it, but they still couldn't believe that they would write like barely intelligible children and then forget about it. They called it absurd.
