Chapter 520

As the door closed behind him, effectively isolating Yves from Sean, Cynthia secured the contract and took a seat in the hallway outside the operating room.

She did not ask Sean about Joshua’s condition. If it were not severe, he would not have paid such a hefty sum to negotiate with Yves. Requesting Yves’s help was a sign of dire circumstances.

As she waited, Sean approached and sat down beside her.

Neither spoke for a while.

Eventually, Sean turned to her and asked, “What’s your relationship with Yves?”

“Friends,” came Cynthia’s succinct response.

“With benefits?”

“No

“Then why did he bring you here?” Sean’s heart tightened bit by bit. His expression was as unruffled as ever, giving the appearance of idle chit–chat.

At this late hour, a man and a woman alone together would certainly raise eyebrows.

Moreover, Yves, as reclusive as he was, would not have kept company unless it was someone important to him.

It indicated that when Sean had contacted Yves, he was with Cynthia.

Cynthia was puzzled by his questioning

Misinterpreting her response, Sean pressed on with an outwardly breezy demeanor, “Ms. Yates, you truly take a relaxed attitude toward relationships. It’s been less than two months since your divorce, and you’ve already found a new love interest?

“No.” Cynthia’s heart was entirely consumed by the situation unfolding in the operating room.

Sean said nothing more, though a rush of emotion surged in his gaze. Were it not for the reminders from reason and past experiences, he might have asked some questions he should not have.

Time passed slowly. An hour. Two hours. The operating room doors remained closed. Cynthia had a growing suspicion that Joshua’s condition might be more serious than she’d thought.

Neither of them spoke a word in the quiet hallway. Each lost in their own thoughts.

At four in the morning, the operating room doors finally opened, and Yves emerged.

Suddenly, Cynthia shot to her feet. Sean, however, merely raised his gaze to look at Yws with ring

“How is he?” Cynthia asked.

Yves spoke succinctly, “Not good. Although the bullet has been removed and the bleeding has stopped, his central nervous system has suffered serious damage. Whether he will wake up or not will depend on the next forty–eight hours.”

Cynthia’s heart tightened. “How could this happen?”

“Before this fever, he must have had a high temperature once before. That fever hadn’t completely subsided when this one hit, plus the serious gunshot wound and loss of blood. It’s a miracle he’s still alive,” Yves explained matter–of–factly. He probably would have died on the spot if the bullet had strayed even slightly off its course.

Cynthia was taken aback.

“Even if he wakes up, he could suffer from aphasia, sensory Impairment, or paralysis due to the damage to his central nervous system, Yves continued.

These words felt like a heavy stone pressing on Cynthia’s heart, Suddenly, she did not know what to do. If Joslina were to

suffer from any of the conditions Yves had described, she could not imagine how she would handle it.

“Let’s observe him for now. He may just get lucky and not suffer from any complications.” Yves’s tone was as indifferent

Joshua was moved to the Intensive Care Unit. For his better recovery, Yves arised against visiting him. Cynthia stood outside the ward, watching through the observation window as Joshua lay on the bed, covered with tubes Her heart ached at the sight. He had taken that ballet for her, had he not? The more she thought about it, the more she felt a heaviness in her legs, making it almost impossible to move.

Yves, now changed into fresh clothes, said, “You don’t need to keep watch. There are professionals watching over him. You should rest for now. If anything happens, you’ll need to notify the Neal family.”
