Before Celeste could even speak, Skyler angrily grabbed her arm and shouted, “Did you do it? Did you have Kaylee beaten up like that? Was it you?!”
Celeste frowned, looking clueless. “Mom, what are you talking about? What happened to Kaylee?”
“Stop playing dumb!” Just looking at Celeste made Skyler think of Kaylee’s bloody face, and she raised her hand to slap her.
David, furious, shouted, “Don’t you dare!”
Celeste braced herself for the hit, but then her wrist was grabbed and she was pulled aside. The slap landed hard on Liam’s jaw instead.
Skyler’s sharp nails left a few shallow red marks on Liam’s chin.
Celeste looked at Liam in surprise, her hand unconsciously tightening.
Liam clenched his teeth, glaring at Skyler. “Had enough? If you want to talk, let’s do it outside!”
Skyler’s face turned even uglier, not expecting Liam to take the slap for Celeste. He usually wouldn’t get so angry.
The police quickly stepped in. “Mrs. Reed, please calm down. Let’s investigate before jumping to conclusions.” Turning to Celeste, they said, “Miss Celeste, there was a violent assault last night. We’d like to ask you about it. Can we talk outside?”
Upon hearing ‘violent assault,” David tried to sit up.
“What violent assault? You must have the wrong person.”
The police thought David might be the catalyst for this incident, so they told him about Kaylee being beaten up. novelbin
David swiftly interjected, refuting the accusation. “It’s impossible for Celeste to be involved. She was with me at the hospital last night. There’s no way she could have had the time to commit such an act.”
The police raised an eyebrow, another alibi for Celeste.
“We didn’t say she did it. We just want to ask some questions.”
“Then ask here! If she dares to hit her in front of me, who knows what you’ll do when I’m not around?”
The police were at a loss for words. They didn’t expect the fancy–dressed Skyler to actually attack Celeste.
Skyler coldly said, “In front of you, so you can make up excuses for her?”
“Then don’t question her,” David snapped. “If you have evidence, arrest her. If not, get out!”
As both sides were at a stalemate, a man’s voice came from the doorway. “What’s going on here?”
Everyone turned to see Steven, holding a bouquet of flowers and looking surprised.
Liam frowned. “Why are you here?”
“I heard Celeste’s family member was in the hospital, so I thought I’d come visit,” he paused, looking around at the two police officers. “What’s happening?”
The police caught on to Steven’s words and asked, “You said Celeste was with you last night?”
Steven nodded. “We talked about work for a while, and I accompanied her to the hospital.”
The two police officers exchanged glances. One asked, “What time did you leave?”
“Maybe around 8 or 9. We talked for a long time, and then I took her back to the hospital.”
Celeste looked up at Steven, who casually asked the police, “What are you investigating?”
