Chapter 142: Berserking Demon Ent
Level ??? - Phantom Hounds.
Four legged beasts sprinted straight for her. Thankfully they weren’t fluffy, rather, they were an unsightly creature. Their fur was mottled in spots and jagged in others. The lower half of the beast's legs were almost translucent, if it wasn’t for the dew wetting the hairs on their legs from the plants.
There were nine of them all barreling at her, but they seemed to be intelligent. Smart enough to discover that the golden haired human was a threat.
Maybe it was from her mana, or the way she carried herself, or even from the look in her eyes, but they erred on the side of caution. The phantom hounds flanked around and were ready to use pack tactics against her.
But Astrid had other plans. Immediately she pulled the eyes of two of the nearest hounds that were attempting to flank her from behind. Their heads exploded. The other beasts wasted no time as they leapt at her with full force.
Astrid smirked and connected to the matter all around her barrier. The moment the beasts entered the mass of matter, she [Crashed] it. With an explosion, their limbs were sent scattering all over her shield, until they slid down with a red mark and thudded against the floor.
They weren’t fluffy. Astrid sighed in relief.
She absorbed one of the eyes, then another, but the Skill she received; Phantom Legs–were simply not worth keeping. It reduced her footstep noise, and made them lighter. Something she didn’t even remotely need.
Afterall, if she wanted to be stealthy, she would just rely on her illusions for that and shroud the entire area. Depending on their Intelligence, and Level difference of course.
No, she needed passive Skills. Something like the Ice Blood Skill she had received from the spawn serpent. And the most powerful abilities came from the stronger monsters.
Tree king, where are you? Astrid trudged forward, she no longer had any desire to escape from this place. If the tree king was relying on monsters to do its bidding, it meant it didn’t have the strength to fight with its own body.
Most likely, it had focused purely on its own defence and relied upon the mind controlled monsters to fight for it.
That meant if she could get past all the monsters here, it would be defenceless. And if it had eyes…
Astrid killed a few more phantom hounds, and spawn stragglers. Each [Crash] was capable of instantly killing them, and it didn’t seem there was much in the chasm that was able to handle her strength–apart from the already dead serpent.
She levitated into the air and took a closer look at the pillar of light within the night sky. It was bright. Too bright. Which meant she was getting closer. Realising how much closer she had gotten, she quickly checked the time she had left.
Time remaining until the birth of the evolution stone: 32:31:05
Time flew when one was having fun. She just hoped that the Great No-Eyed One had managed to end the fight, and found her friends. But her thoughts remained from before. If they were going to be anywhere, it was at the beacon of light.
It was the only thing that was visible to everyone, so it was an obvious call. Brett was smart enough to realise that. Hopefully.
Noticing she still had a bunch of time left, it gave her confidence in being able to beat the tree king, then get the hell out of this place.
Flying back down, she headed straight for the large doors located at the back of the cavern. More monsters appeared, but with a few [Crashes], they were sent scattering. The xp they gave wasn’t worth the hassle of chasing the rest down.
She ignored the System messages, and approached the doors. She levitated in front of them and was about to place her hand against the tree roots, but she noticed they were different.
Etchings were carved into the roots, they were presumably a language belonging to this world, but Astrid wasn’t sure.
Even using Identify didn’t give her any information related to whatever was inside. There was only one way to find out. Astrid touched the door. The walls rumbled.
Oh, what now. Astrid spat as she leapt back ten metres and flew up into the air. She concentrated her Psych Domain on the walls, where the other tree ents had emerged from. But nothing appeared.
Instead, an enormous mass of matter dropped through a hole in the ceiling–right above the door.
With a crash, a hulking humanoid with short stubby horns emerging from his head, snapped his vision straight at Astrid. His eyes were filled with an unbridled, raw rage that desired nothing but to fight. The fighting intent was so palpable, that Astrid could feel it rattle her bones–boil her blood.
The aura the monster held was enough to finally make Astrid weary.
Level ??? - Berserking Demon Ent.
It slammed its axe in the ground, then swiped it along the dirt floor toward Astrid. The demon created a projectile of its axe that swept straight for her. But that wasn’t all. The earth itself seemed to shift from the attack. Along with the blade, spikes of earth chased after it.
Astrid dodged to the side while blasting the demon with a high powered [Crash]. The blast sent the monster crashing back into the rooted door, yet no other damage appeared to have been made.
Rather, it just seemed to make it angrier.
Astrid thought she would be safe against the mostly melee monster. So she levitated in the air, away from the reach of its axe. She could just dodge the projectile blade, but the ent obviously had its means to deal with a flying creature.
The demon expelled a stream of water vapour from its mouth and a pair of wings cracked out from behind its back.
Oh. Astrid remarked as she got ready for a fight.
Using the time the monster was taking to take out its wings, although it was only seconds, Astrid used [Crash] a few times against it.
The monster shrugged its shoulders, but Astrid turned the blasts to aim for its newly formed wing.
Realising that it was in danger of losing its ability to fly, the ent smashed its foot against the door and blasted forward. Finally, its other wing had formed, and it leapt up in the air to join Astrid.
Astrid created a couple clones of herself, then used Psych Warp to scatter a bunch of needles down onto the floor. As soon as they made contact with the ground, they disappeared.
Knowing full well the extent of a berserking Class, Astrid had to end the fight fast. The longer the battle raged on, the stronger it would become. Just by gazing into the monster's eyes, she could tell. But it also had a weakness.
Its rage-filled mind hampered its ability to think.
Along with the clones, she created a smoke screen with her illusion. The demon cleaved straight through one of her clones, but a [Crash] blasted its wing once more. It stumbled through the air, but with another flap of its wing, it tore straight for her.
It was a lucky charge, but the monster's axe cleaved straight through her Mind Barrier like it was a single pane of glass. Astrid moved along with the hit, and sent her body crashing to the floor.
The moment she struck the floor, the ent was already chasing after her with a rage-fueled scream.
But it was what Astrid had planned. Hitting the floor, a misty illusion broke free from her body, and an extra clone alongside it.
She rolled into the thick foliage as the demon's axe slammed straight into where her body once was–and into the clone. Astrid summoned another clone the moment the other one was murdered, and sent it up into the air.
Left Eye of Mana proved to be extremely useful as she used her mana container to her heart's content.
From the sound of the clone in the air, the demonic ent slammed its foot into the ground. With another flap of its wings, it was clear one of them was becoming damaged as it impacted his accuracy somewhat.
Astrid used the time to form a spiralling sphere of dark matter. She grinned at the powerful might that it exuded.
The demon didn’t bother stopping. Its unbalanced body swung its axe in a mighty arc–sending a wave of energy like a death scythe straight for the clone. It was immediately severed in two. However, it didn’t grant the beast a hint of satisfaction.
It roared in a maddened frenzy as its head snapped around in multiple directions. It was trying to figure out where the golden haired girl was. Then, its head twitched, stopping right where she was crouched within the thick grass.
Just as the ent was about to dive. Astrid released the spiralling sphere of dark matter. A sonic boom was heard as the ball shot through the air. It was so fast that the berserker wasn’t even given a chance to react before the attack tore straight through its chest. It didn’t stop there. Instead it travelled even further through the wall on the other side of the demon, unknown as to where it finally stopped.
Astrid had tried to [Crash] it while it was travelling through the air, but it was simply too fast for her to react. Much like the demon. It was something she could only attempt at a higher level of control–Even with the added bonuses from the Transcendent Skill.
She had aimed straight for the red beating heart thanks to her Psych Domain Skill. But her own heart dropped as the demon roared once more. This time, however, it emitted a red hue from its eyes.
Astrid flared her psychic mana within her eye and yanked the eyes with all her might. Quickly realising that it was too difficult, she focused her control on only one.
The monster held its face, as the connection was cut, then, it dived straight for her. It ruthlessly swung its axe in crazy, repeated swings. Dozens of spectral blades cleaved straight for her body.
Dodging each one, Astrid was about to dodge the barreling monster when it suddenly increased its speed at a tremendous rate. It reached her in the blink of an eye as its hand punched through her multiple barriers.
It grabbed hold of her neck and slammed her body into the wall. Instantly, her breathing was cut off from the intense death grip of the monster. But Astrid didn’t panic.
Just as the monster was about to cave her skull in with its fist, Astrid connected to the needles and shot them straight into the back of the monster's soft, fleshy neck. They continued their trajectory and impaled straight into its brain.
With no more resistance, the beast fell to the ground with a thud.
Astrid massaged her throat as she kicked the still warm body of the demonic ent. Aim for the damned head next time, got it.
Taking a breath, Astrid pulled out its eyes. If the markings on the gate meant anything, then this was the last guardian of the tree king. As even with her power ups, it was a worthy fight.
With a grin adorned on her face. She absorbed its eyes into her Dominating Sovereigns Eye.
