Chapter 121: Chapter 92: Chilling Encounter at the Base
After Yan Fei had his fill, he began to change the muscles of his face and then applied makeup to himself, turning into a sunny and handsome young man. Putting on new clothes from Universal Space, he seemed like a completely different person. Now, no one who saw him could possibly associate him with the murderous maniac from last night.
Yan Fei started to walk down the mountain and arrived at a small town at the base, where he boarded a bus back to Tokyo Downtown. Though last night’s great battle was hidden within the fierce storm, there were still Tokyo citizens who noticed the air battle and the airplanes that fell in the city area. With the Internet so developed, these eyewitnesses conveniently spread the news of the air battle over Tokyo, and the information quickly proliferated, stirring panic among the long-peaceful residents of Japan as the fear once again surfaced of their skies being dominated by Allied warplanes during World War II.
The Japanese Government was in a state of disarray, not only had they failed to take revenge last night, but they also accrued new hatred, which intensified their loathing for the mysterious Drone. While they were discussing how to locate the Drone, rumors began to circulate among civilians of a war brewing in Tokyo. Thus, the Japanese Government had to temporarily abandon their search for the mysterious Drone and focus on quelling the domestic panic.
In an official statement to the public, the Japanese Government declared that the Self-Defense Forces’ Air Wing had specially chosen to conduct air battle exercises under extreme weather conditions to ensure combat power, improve pilots’ skills, and had achieved positive results, verifying the Air Wing’s battle capabilities to defend Japan’s airspace. Therefore, they asked the public not to panic and to consciously resist detrimental rumors. At the same time, the government extended its reach to the Internet, deleting all posts related to the air battle. As for the houses affected by the crashing warplanes, they were covered with canvas to prevent others from entering.
After the government’s efforts, the terror of the previous night’s air battle in Tokyo began to fade away, and the ordinary Japanese people resumed their normal busy yet uneventful lives.
Since Yan Fei’s previous residence was no longer safe to return to, he had to find a different target. He got off the bus in Tokyo Downtown and, after several transfers, arrived in Ayase City in the southeastern part of Tokyo, where Atsugi Naval Air Base was located in the center of the city.
By the time Yan Fei arrived near Atsugi Naval Air Base, it was noon local time. Today was supposed to be an open day for the public at Atsugi Naval Air Base, allowing civilians to enter the base to view the military aircraft. However, due to last night’s major incident and significant losses to the US Forces’ aircraft, today’s open day was canceled at the last minute. The Japanese military enthusiasts who had waited near the airbase for a long time were greatly disappointed, but facing the fully armed US Forces, they dared not create trouble and could only leave dejectedly, looking forward to the next open day.
Yan Fei disguised himself as an ordinary military enthusiast, with a similarly dejected expression, but he managed to take panoramic photos of the base with his mobile phone’s camera. Since these enthusiasts were all equipped with various cameras, Yan Fei’s use of his mobile phone for photography didn’t attract any attention. The airbase housed a large number of combat aircraft. Some belonged to the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and others to the US Air Force. On the airport runway, Yan Fei finally laid eyes on the F-15 Fighters he had hoped for, but he didn’t see any US Navy F-18s.
Atsugi Naval Air Base is the largest US Naval Base in Japan. Whenever the Seventh Fleet’s aircraft carrier docks in Tokyo Bay, their Navy’s carrier-based aircraft would temporarily stay at this airport. Unfortunately, there had been no recent visits by US aircraft carriers to Japan, so the most powerful third-generation fighter, the US Navy’s F-18, was not present.
However, Yan Fei was not disappointed. Although the F-18 was touted as the strongest king among the US third-generation fighters, the F-15 wasn’t far behind. As long as it received an upgrade through the Mysterious Power, a Drone modeled after the F-15 would undoubtedly far surpass the combat power of the F-18 and truly be invincible in the world.
Having confirmed the presence of the F-15 Fighters at the airbase and observed the terrain around it, noting down a few key spots, Yan Fei pretended to leave in disappointment. After leaving the airbase, he went to a park in the center of Ayase City and sat on a bench, closing his eyes as if dozing, while in reality, he was planning his operation for the night.
Yan Fei could have waited for the next open day at a US Military Base and mingled with the visiting enthusiasts to scan the F-15 in plain sight, which would have been the safest approach. But he was unsure whether anomalies might occur during the scan of the F-15, as it would be his first time using the scanning function, and he didn’t know what the specific outcome might be. Should any anomalies arise during the scan, he would be in serious trouble.
Even if he could successfully scan the F-15, Yan Fei had no idea when the next open day at the airbase would be. That time could come soon, or it might take a long while. Currently staying in Japan, Yan Fei could face unexpected situations at any moment. He simply couldn’t afford to wait around for an indeterminate time. Therefore, his plan was to sneak into the airbase tonight to scan the F-15, to avoid the risk of complications arising from further unforeseen changes.
Yan Fei’s sunny and handsome appearance was quite captivating. Even as he sat pretending to doze, he caught the eye of several young and beautiful Japanese girls who pretended to approach him accidentally, looking to strike up a conversation. Although Yan Fei appreciated the stylish look of these Japanese girls, he feared encountering one of the four major Asian dark arts—the Japanese makeup technique. Besides, he had an important task at hand and dared not create any diversions. So, pretending to be oblivious to their flirtations, he rejected the girls’ invitations, leaving them sorely disappointed.
