Chapter 93: Reunion (3)
Billy frowned when he heard that grenades kill a mutant zombie or two, but they weren’t that useful. Perhaps they could be used to power level some individuals, but there was no reason for that. Giving power to more people was too dangerous…
“Okay… a few dozen grenades you will have, but when you decide to use it, you will have to warn me. I will accompany you just in case to avoid trouble,” Billy replied.
A few dozen… that wasn’t so bad. In fact, Luke asked for more for him to receive a lot more than he had anticipated. Given that grenades in his hands could kill dozens of zombies, a few dozen would give him more coins than the value of the original items. Amanda couldn’t help but sigh since she knew what Luke did. He basically scammed his friend. Luke knew that as well, but Billy deserved at least that much.
Due to the differences between time zones and the duration of the trip, the group had arrived when the sun was rising, but right at that moment, it was almost noon… Luke knew that if they didn’t hurry up, they would reach Rome, but at a difficult time, fighting at night might be troublesome. In the worst-case scenario, they will have to delay the trip to the next day… Fortunately, everything was ready for departure, but there was one problem. Many survivors approached the airplane when the soldiers cleared the area. Naturally, they wanted to leave the city with them.
“Oh, man…” Billy said and then sighed.
“What should we do?” Amanda asked.
“There is nothing to do… we don’t have enough room to transport anyone else,” Billy said. “I will try to convince them.”
Convince them to do what? That was what Luke wanted to ask while he saw Billy moving away. He wanted to leave as soon as possible, but then his eagerness decreased a little when he saw some families among that group. There were even kids among them… they looked pretty much physically and mentally exhausted since they couldn’t fight and had to endure the fear of death pretty much every moment along the last week.
“I wonder if there is something we can do for them…” Rina said.
“It must be a wonderful way of living, constantly worrying about someone else’s problems…” Shalia said and then sighed. “Either you are a moron, or you have too much free time in your hands. In you case, I would bet in both.”
Luke felt bad for them, but while he could give them a hand, he wouldn’t because that would never end. Once he starts letting his conscience bother with that kind of feeling all the time, the same thing will happen again and again… Luke was probably the last person in the world that fit to play the role of a hero, after all.
After a while, Billy returned, and apparently, after hearing about the situation, Frank said to take the survivors to Rome. He also said that once the soldiers secure the people they wanted to rescue, they should defeat as many zombies as possible that might be blocking the exits.
“Why did he decide that?” Luke asked.
“No idea,” Billy replied.
As long as Luke meets his parents, he wouldn’t mind fighting some zombies and securing the exits of the next city, but he didn’t feel like working without knowing the reason. Besides, what would Frank gain with that? Regardless, they returned to the airplane, and a lot more people were with them inside it. The survivors had many people to focus their eyes on, but they focused on Luke because of Rina and Shalia. At first, they thought that Luke was a weirdo who liked toys in weird shapes and appearances, but then they noticed that they were alive…. Fortunately, no one decided to bother him.
“You are popular, Luke,” Chloe said since the silence was really unnerving.
Luke ignored that because he had better things to worry about, he was about to see his parents again. While he talked with them ten days ago using his cellphone, he hadn’t seen them in five weeks, since he moved to the dorms of the college. Now that he thought about it, it was pretty silly, but he didn’t visit them in order not to make them think he was homesick. Since his father was really bothersome, he would say that dozens of times in an hour… Still, after experiencing the last week, Luke thought that such a thing was pointless, and those were the worries of a kid.
After a while, Billy left the cockpit of the airplane and then approached while making a difficult expression. Luke already could imagine that something bothersome had happened… and his fears were right in the end.
“We have a problem…” Billy said and then sighed. “We received a message from the survivors in Rome, and it seems a new type of enemy appeared.”
“A new species of monster or…” Chloe said.
“That is right, is one of those big-ass monsters you mentioned,” Billy said. “He isn’t that big, but extremely powerful and troublesome.”
“What kind of monster originally appeared in Rome?” Luke asked.
“Goblins… and the one that appeared is a Goblin Champion apparently,” Billy replied. “Not only can he completely command the others, his presence apparently boosted their strength even further. He is also pretty smart… in a single day, he already decimated one of the four hordes of zombies that were blocking the exits of the town.”
“But…” Chloe said.
“But he put his minions to guard the exit, and right at this moment, they are trying to make another one,” Billy replied.
That was bad… zombies were easy to handle for Luke, but the goblins apparently would be much more troublesome. Considering that they decimated a horde, their levels should have increased quite a lot… Just when Luke was about to reach his goals, something like that happened. His luck was really the worst.
