Chapter 247 - YOU SHOULD HAVE BLAMED ME
Chapter 247 - YOU SHOULD HAVE BLAMED ME
Kris's mind was tangled, but he managed to drive safely to a building that was so familiar to him.
It was the house of the guards that was bought by Selena many years ago. Selena treated the guards as her sons, so she even bought a house for the guards to live in.
It was a one-story house that didn't too small or too big. There was no spacious yard surrounding the house, and there was only a small yard made of the pavement in front of the yard. It was just a small yard, but it was still enough for Kris to park his red card in the yard.
His mind was complicated, and upon turning off the car engine, he didn't immediately get out of the car. Instead, he unbuckled the seatbelt and leaned his back against the back of his chair.
It was the first time he was disappointed in Kevin. In the past, it was Kevin who was often disappointed in him because he lied a lot to the young scientist. Now the condition reversed because Kris was disappointed in his fiance.
Kris didn't want to get angry at his fiance, but his mental condition was not good now. He was easily offended by his fiance's words.
Kevin kept suspecting Steve, and it got into his nerves. Steve was his most trusted subordinate, so how could the guard end up betraying him?
Kris couldn't believe in his fiance's suspicion, and he chose to leave his fiance in the orphanage and headed to the guards' house instead.
Steve was off duty today, and he needed to have a chat with his trusted guard. Taking a deep breath, the tanned man then opened the car door and immediately headed to the front door of the house.
He even had the keys to the house, so he didn't need to press the doorbell. Fishing out the keys from his pants pocket, he then used the keys to open the door.
The door opened, and he stepped into the house. And he almost bumped into Steve, who was walking with a jacket in his right hand.
"Sir?" The purple-haired guard looked surprised while furrowing his brows at Kris. "What are you doing here? Is there something wrong in the orphanage again? Where's Mr. Beischel? He is alright, isn't he?"
Steve was even worried about Kevin, but the latter kept accusing the former of something so cruel.
Kris didn't immediately answer as he brought his long legs toward the couch in the living room. "Make some tea and have a chat with me, Steve," he said as he sat down on one of the couches.
Steve was puzzled by his boss' attitude, but he still nodded his head before going to the kitchen.
After Steve left, Kris sighed heavily before resting his head on the back of the couch. He looked so dramatic, but he was confused now. Steve acted normally all the time, and he was even worried about Kevin's condition.
Steve was honest and loyal, and he couldn't bring himself to doubt the innocent guard.
The said guard came back with two cups of tea, no longer with a jacket in his hand.
"I was about to go to the orphanage, Sir. I was worried that there would be another attack, and I planned to join the others in guarding the orphanage," Steve spoke as he placed the two cups on the coffee table. One cup was in front of Kris, and another cup was for himself as he sat down opposite his boss.
"Why do you want to go to the orphanage when today is your day off, Steve?" Kris questioned his subordinate as he raised his head again.
"I don't want the same tragedy to happen again, Sir," Steve replied while bringing his gaze down to the floor. "I've let my brothers get killed by the robbers, and I won't let the same tragedy happen again with my new comrades."
Kris could see that Steve was feeling guilty, and the man couldn't even look at him in the eyes, probably afraid that his boss would feel disappointed in him again.
"Is it true that you've been back to the apartment building more than an hour before you called me that day, Steve?"
Kris didn't want to doubt his trusted guard, but he still wanted to make sure that Steve was indeed in the building when his other guards got killed.
Steve was taken aback by Kris' question, and he was even at a loss for words for a moment.
"I... That's true, Sir," the guard finally replied with his timid tone. "I apologize that I didn't tell you about that before, but I feel guilty because I couldn't save my brothers even if I've been in the building when the incident happened."
Steve confirmed that he was indeed in the building, and it made Kris frown. "Why didn't you tell me that you were indeed in the building? You only told me that you arrived in the apartment and could only find your brothers' corpse, but you didn't tell me about your early arrival at the building."
Steve gaped, and he immediately fell on his knees while ducking his head lowly. "I'm sorry, Sir!" He once again apologized to his boss. "I did return early to the apartment, but instead of immediately joining my brothers, I met my girlfriend first. She is the bodyguard of the minister's daughter who lives one floor below your apartment. It's my fault that my brothers were killed!"
Kris was surprised by Steve's confession. Steve didn't even tell him that he was dating someone, and he was shocked by the new information. But perhaps Steve was just afraid that he would go against the relationship if he found out about it.
Steve looked so guilty, and Kris sighed heavily. "Go back to your seat and drink your tea, Steve. It's not your fault, and I don't blame you," he said before sipping his tea in the cup.
Steve remained in his position, and he was still bowing his head as he reflected on his mistake.
Kris shook his head when he saw how stubborn his guard was. He was about to scold his bodyguard, but then he felt his head getting dizzy, and he dropped the cup from his hands before falling on the couch.
Hearing the loud thud in front of him, Steve immediately looked up at his boss, and a smirk plastered on his face.
"You should have blamed me from the start, Sir.. I'm indeed the one who killed my brothers."
