Chapter 288 - Regret
Chapter 288 - Regret
When she didnot get a response word from Devin, Leena raised her head to see Devin lost in thoughts. ''Devin? Are you with me?''
''I am,'' Devin replied, pulling Leena closer towards him, but she backed off. ''I might accidentally hurt your wound.''
''I am fine_.''
Leena silenced him, putting her index finger over his lips. ''End of the discussion.''
''Yes, Madam.'' Acknowledged Devin. If the president of his home orders, then he has Nothing but to obey.
''Do you want to talk about it?'' Leena's voice turned to a whisper as she looked at Devin, conflicted. ''When the doctors informed your chance of survival is less, I_I couldn't...'' Her throat tightened, and without her knowledge, a flood of tears gushed down her cheeks.
''Leena, please, don't cry.'' Devin patiently consoled her, rubbing her head with his right arm. ''Everything is sorted out now.''
''Nothing is sorted out. You brushed past my theory when I told you a broken watch is ominous. You didnot give me the chance to voice my thoughts when I actually wanted to ask you not to go to Norway on that day.'' Leena wiped her tears, but they flooded anyway. ''I warned you ample times not to move recklessly, but you do it every time. You don't listen to any of my words, and finally, give an excuse of sorry when the matter goes out of hand. Do you know how much scared I was?''
''Leena, look at me.'' Devin gently cupped her face, profoundly looking into her eyes. Pain is the only emotion he noticed in her eyes, driving him to the edge of a knife, and again, he was responsible. ''I am sorry for the times I hurt you, and for every other reason, you are angry at me. I can't assure you of the future, but I promise I will be careful. I will listen to your every word. Does that make you happy now?''
''Not until you answer my questions.'' Without waiting for Devin's reply, Leena started. ''You have to have at least ten person's protection around you.''
''I am not a kid_''
''Was that an empty promise you made earlier?'' She questioned back, pausing him in the midst.
''No, Sweetheart! I am fine having twenty also.'' Finally, Devin gave in.
''Do you believe in superstitions?'' Leena probed another question.
''I live with them.'' Instead of being on par with Leena, he was one step ahead of her.
''Ah! Babylicious. You are so cute, Devin.'' In her sheer happiness, Leena threw her hands at Devin until she heard a strong yelp. She instantly shrank back with an involuntary gasp. ''I am sorry. I am sorry. Did I hurt you?''
''Of course, it hurts, but you know how to cool me.'' He said, with a wink to tease leena. Her blush now appeared even cuter.
''But mom said it takes six to eight weeks to heal your breastbone completely. Until then, you need to keep a check.'' She whispered, turning beet red.
''So, I have to stay away from drinking water for six to eight weeks?'' Feigning innocence, Devin asked, enjoying Leena's flushed expression turning into intricate.
''W_hat?'' Leena asked, dumbfounded. ''D_id you ask for water?''
''Of course...'' He innocently replied and again exclaimed dramatically. ''Wait! Did you think of eating me dry? Seriously, Leena, you are not even considering me as a patient? I had surgery a while_.''
'''Stop it, Devin.'' Leaning forward, Leena closed Devin's mouth to stop him from spouting nonsense and their position, mislead the person who just entered the room.
''Ahem! The FBI calls it indecent exposure.''
Leena immediately climbed down from the bed and peered at Kurt. ''When the heart speaks, the mind finds it indecent to object.''
''What do you mean by it?'' Kurt questioned in confusion.
''I don't know. I just framed a sentence that appeared in my mind.'' Leena gave a little shrug to show as if it didnot matter. ''On a side note, knock the door before you enter. We are a married couple.''
Ignoring Leena's rantings, Kurt walked towards his friend. When Devin was in Norway, he often visited Leena's office, and the idea of putting her in prison along with Andrew and Jasper for at least a day to shut their mouth was the only thought running in his mind. Criminals are better before her.
'How are you feeling, Vincy?'' Kurt asked. When he was still talking about Devin's accident, Fredrick received a call from the hospital, and everybody rushed, although it was midnight.
''Can't you see, my husband is fine.'' Leena butted in, giving him water.
''I didnot ask you.'' Kurt argued, throwing daggers at Leena.
''I didnot_''
''Sweetheart, Leave him alone.''
''Okay.'' She pouted and settled on the chair.
''Did mom and dad also have come?'' Devin asked, turning to Kurt.
''Yeah! They are talking with Aunt Heather.'' Replied Kurt. ''We need to talk, Vincy.''
''Later, Kurt.'' Leena and his mother-in-law generously contributed two classes today. He can't have any more today.
Kurt also decided to leave the matter aside since Devin is still recovering, and he will also get time to prepare for the lecture. Minutes later, everybody started to enter the room. Evelyn sobbed, holding Devin's son until left with no tear. ''Don't cry, mom. I am fine now.'' Holding her mom's hand, Devin comforted her.
''Eve, your son has passed the biggest hurdle in life. You should be happy.'' Fredrick joined his son with a sigh.
''Aunt, eve. Don't worry. I will protect Devin from now. It's my responsibility.'' Wiping Evelyn's tears, Leena comforted her.
''Smack his ass if he doesn't listen to you.''
''I already do that'' Leena giggled, and everybody burst into laughter except one person.
Not before everyone left, Devin dozed off when fatigue kicked nib. Tugging him under the sheets properly, Leena kissed Devin's forehead before she went towards the bed.
.....
The following day, Leena went home to get fresh along with Reese and Jane with her brother's continuous nagging.
''Leena, you owe me a favor for taking care of the company in your absence,'' Reese said as she stepped into the house along with Leena.
''I know what you are trying to tell.'' Leena sighed, aware she would never know the answer to Andrew and Jasper's relationship. ''Why can't you ask your brother, Reese?''
''He doesn't like mentioning Rew's name.'' Replied Reese, feeling down in the dumps. Before her parents throw a bomb, Reese wants to know if she has a chance with Andrew.
''Fine! I will add your proposal to my list.'' Having said that, Leena strolled into her room to get fresh.
..
Back in the hospital, Heather informed the family, Devin could get discharged in a week. A while later, happily, everyone went home except for Wilbur because it's a stern order from his sister to stay by Devin's side. Otherwise, she will start a war with him.
''My daughter cried buckets when I informed of your accident,'' Wilbur stated. When everybody stopped crying, his daughter wept her heart out, highlighting herself.
Devin chuckled, imagining Savny's face. ''So, you fell personally victimized by your own_''
A knock interrupted, concluding Devin's thoughts. It was the guard waiting outside. ''Sir, you have a visitor.''
''Let me go and check.'' Wilbur got up and opened the door. A while later, he arrived and looked at Devin with a perplexed expression.
''Who is it?'' Devin asked, surprised by Wilbur's sudden change of stance.
Swallowing hard, Wilbur whispered. ''It's E_than. He wants to meet you.''
In a flash, Devin's rage burned like hellfire when the memories of Leena's humiliation crossed his mind. He might not be behind her accident, but he cannot forget the indignity she suffered. ''You know we don't get along with each other, right?''
''I understand. But he has come to see you on the day you were shot_''
Ethan barged into the room despite the guards tried to stop him. ''I have come all the way to meet you. Is this how you treat a friend?''
''Don't pretend to be my friend to my face.'' Devin retorted and signaled Wilbur to leave, and it was also a signal not to let Leena appear before Ethan goes.
The moment Wilbur left, Devin fiercely glanced at Ethan. ''Why are you here?''
''To check if you still look handsome in the hospital dress.''
''A sense of humor makes a man handsome, which you don't have.'' Devin retorted.
''I wish I could see your brain to know what you think of me.'' Ethan sighed, ranking a hand through his hair. ''How are you?''
''Good.'' Devin contributed only a single word. He didnot wish to waste his energy on Ethan.
''H_ow is Leena?'' In a whisper, Ethan asked. He wished to see her at least today, but luck never favors him.
Silence prevailed in the room.
''I know your anger has a reason.'' Ethan looked over his hand. He broke her, hit her, disrespected her. He tried to numb the pain, but it made him worse. ''Í made a mistake, now I am living with the consequences. I regret it; I really do.'' Sometimes, Ethan wants to go back in time and punch his face.
''I feel so ashamed that I showed my worst side to the best thing that happened to me.''
For a second, Devin felt a different side of Ethan. The Ethan he knew would always keep ego at his front, but today Devin felt Ethan broke the walls.
....
Meanwhile, outside, freshly showered, Leena arrived, and when she was about to open the door, Wilbur came rushing towards her and held the door knob. ''You can't go in. Devin is taking a rest.''
''So what?'' Confusion sprawled across her face.
''Just listen to me, Leena_''
''Cutie You have come....'' Leena screamed, turning her side, and the moment Wilbur looked over the direction, Leena kicked his calf and pushed open the door.
