Chapter 405 - Genes
Chapter 405 - Genes
Kyle wondered how it would feel to experience father's love because she never received it once from his biological father. She believed it would forever remain as a fantasy, but Kurt made it true. The father's love that she thought never existed in her dictionary has finally found a hidden word called Arnold Weller.
They were at the dining hall for lunch again on Arnold's order. Not that she minded when it comes to food. Her appetite shaped into life at the sight of mouth-watering dishes. While she ate, Arnold talked about Kurt's childhood memories which Kyle listened to with utmost interest and often teased Kurt. Not so fancy for Kurt because he was a brat when he was a child. Finally, Arnold's conversation was back to square again. Marriage!
''So, when are we going to hold the wedding ceremony? I need to start making the list of people to invite.'' Arnold asked Kyle and briefly shot a look at the maid to serve more rice onto Kyle's plate. The servant scowed at his master before filling the already loaded plate.
There he goes again! Kyle grasped Kurt's hand under the table and laced her fingers through his. She silently pleaded with him to handle the situation. It's not even an hour they confessed their feelings for each other. Now, it's escalated to marriage and children already. She wants to go on dates, trips and experience the feeling of being in love.
''Dad.'' Kurt snapped at his father. He could sense Kyle is about to cry out of embarrassment. ''If you keep talking about weddings, I will not bring her here anymore.'' Marriage with Kyle made him excited, but it should be mutual respect. Unless she is ready, he will not force her.
''Fine.'' Arnold scoffed but turned quiet. Following lunch, Arnold showed the entire house and his medal collections to Kyle, not giving Kurt a chance to speak with Kyle.
''Aren't you informing your friends?'' Kurt hinted, following behind them. He knows his dad's trigger button.
''You are right.'' Arnold's face lit up. ''Thanks for reminding, son.''
The second Arnold left, Kurt pulled her into his room. ''My dad is little nagging at times. Don't mind it.''
''Not at all. I like it.'' Kyle toured his room, and like his grumpy mood, the room was also dull. With no one around, she hugged him from behind to feel the warmth. ''I am happy.''
''You ate food worth three days, so obviously, you should be happy.'' He tantalized her.
She smacked his back, a smile on her face. Teasing her must be a part of his routine, Kyle thought. But she found it sweet of him.
''I was just kidding.'' He said, caressing her hands, folded around his waist. He loved when she showered her love through a tight back hug. She reminded him of happiness, and he reminded her, a home. Together, they were both happy to be at home.
...
Heather strode out of the operation theatre, completing an eight-hour surgery. She trudged her tired body into her cabin. Her glass bottle was empty to quench her thirst. So, she went to fill the water from the corridor's water purifier. She drank the water, refilled the bottle, and right when she turned to leave, she heard a voice calling her name. ''Heather, is that you?''
The water bottle dropped to the ground. His sudden presence came like a bolt out of the blue. Was she surprised to see him after two decades? Definitely yes, because she had completely forgotten about his existence. Quickly composing herself, she picked the bottle from the floor.
Meanwhile, Max wore an excited smile upon seeing his ex-wife. How long has it been since he last saw her? Yet Heather's beauty hadn't diminished. If only she were not a rebel, he would have considered not divorcing her. Little did he forget, it was Heather who threw the papers at his face. ''You haven't changed a bit, Heather. Infact you are looking more beautiful.''
''And you have changed a lot..Grown old.'' Heather studied his face for a good time before commenting. ''Your eyes are weighing down with wrinkled folds, and also, you have got a lot of gray hair.'' Her tone sounded flat, but the sarcasm was at the top, returning a tight slap on Max's face.
Max internally gnashed his teeth. He knows he has aged a little, but did she has to be straightforward in humiliating him? She hadn't changed a bit—same arrogance, same haughtiness, just like his daughter, Leena. Not to sound egotistic, he smiled, presenting his friendly attitude. ''So, how are you?''
''Good.'' Her reply was only a word, not intended to waste any more energy. She didnot even spare a glance at him.
Not taking the hint of her disinterested stance, Max continued. ''I am sorry I was unable to come after you were discharged from the hospital...I got busy with work.''
Heather rolled her eyes internally. Did he think she is a child to believe his lies.
''So, how is your health_''
''Max, what's taking you so long to fill the water?''
Both Heather and Max glanced at the owner of the voice. The click-clack sound in the empty corridor echoed into Heather's ears. A woman gracefully walked, her eyes clouded with curiosity as she stared at the not-so-familiar woman talking to her husband.
Max glanced up at his wife with an awkward smile. Although he talked about his first and second wife, he was a little embarrassed to meet one of them face to face in front of Rosalie. ''Rose, you have come. This is Heather. My first wife.'' He said, giving her a meaningful smile which Rosalie understood instantly.
''Oh! Hello. Pleased to meet you.'' Rosalie greeted her. ''I am Rosalie.''
''Hi. I am Heather.'' Heather nodded in response. The term first wife of Max made her cringe with disgust. But Heather felt something different with Max's wife. Her voice sounded a little familiar to her, but unable to recall where and when she heard.
Heather thought he married his mistress after her accident, but he went for third? She felt strange that this womanizer stopped with a third wife. Anyway, it's not her concern to dwell on his matters. ''It was nice meeting you,'' Heather said. ''I have work. I will take my_''
''No, no. Please carry on. It's been a long since you met each other.'' Rosalie turned to her husband and whispered, ''Emerie is alone. I will go inside.''
Rosalie left.
''You have a daughter?'' Heather's curiosity piqued.
''Yes. Her name is Emerie. She is eighteen years old,'' Max's face lit up when he talked about his daughter. His sweet daughter suddenly fell ill, and when they brought her to the hospital, the doctors informed him she is suffering from appendicitis.
Heather felt Max had changed a lot. He never cared about Leena when she was little, yet he seems very caring towards his daughter. Least concerned about his affairs, Heather turned to leave, but Max held her hand to stop her at the last second. She jerked his hand off, turning a cold eye at him. ''Look, Max, I am not your wife. I will be glad if you behave with your age.''
''Can we talk like friends at least?'' Running out of patience, Max regarded her critically. ''If not for you, at least for our daughter Leena's_''
''My daughter.'' Heather corrected, her voice raised hysterically. ''She is my daughter. Not yours, and can never be."
''What!'' Max sank to the ground, too shocked to register Heather's words.
''Character, intellect, I am sure, lies in the genes.'' Heather's tone was sardonic that made the gruesome bloodletting almost comical in Max's eyes. ''You have got none that my daughter posses.'' She cooly dropped a bomb and left, leaving Max speachless.
Author notes: I am sorry for the two days miss. I will try to upload more chapters on tomorrow, and on Sunday.
I would like to make another announcement. Some readers are already aware, but I want to give a heads up. The book will complete by this month end...provided that I do regular updates. Thanks for sticking to the book, generating your valuable power stones until now. Let's stick until the end, and together give a nice ending to Leena and Devin.
My notes doesn't cost you extra SS.
