Chapter 1215

Charlie James stared at Emily coldly and asked suspiciously, “What are you so scared of?”

Emily denied it vehemently, “I’m not scared. I think bringing a kid to work isn’t exactly appropriate”

Charlie’s icy gaze swept over her face before he said goodbye to Kya, “See you, kid. Don’t forget to miss me, okay?”

“Uncle Charlie, miss me and Mommy tool” Kya waved.

Emily didn’t dare stick around any longer and hastily scooped up Kya and got out of the car.

Not until Charlie’s car was out of sight did they turn around and head back inside the building.

Once they were free of Charlie, Emily seemed to relax, her face softened. She picked up Kya and smiled, “Uncle Charlie is Mommy’s boss. We can’t tell him everything or rely on him too much. He might get fed up.”

Kya’s big eyes stared at her. “But Uncle Charlie is my friend!”

Emily sighed in resignation, “Even friends have boundaries, sweetie.”

Kya slumped onto her shoulder, disappointed, “Okay”

Emily chuckled, “What do you want for dinner? I’ll make it.”

Kya seemed a bit down, “Mom, I want Uncle Charlie to come over for dinner.”

“Uncle Charlie is a busy man!”

Kya pouted, disappointed, “Oh,”

Once they got home, Emily got a call from Gina, who sounded excited, “Emily, how are things going with Dr. Martin?”

Emily answered. Tve made it clear to Dr. Martin we can’t be together”

Gina sounded upset, “Emily, why are you so stubborn? Dr. Martin is such a catch, and he’s into you. You might not find a guy like him even if you tried.”

Emily’s tone was cold. Tve said it before, I’m not looking for a boyfriend or to get married”

“You’re only saying that because you’re young, you don’t know how hard life can be!” Gina scolded, “Wait until you realize how hard it is to raise a kid alone. Then it’ll be too late for regrets”

Emily didn’t know how to get through to her mother, so she just kept quiet.

Gina went on, “Dr. Martin likes you, and he accepts Kya. It’s a good match, Emily. Don’t miss this chance. Call him!”

“Emily, when your brother gets married, a lot of relatives will come. If they find out you’re a single mom, they’re going to talk. But if Dr. Martin is there, it’ll be different. Didn’t you see how nice the Ferber family was to you today? That’s because of Dr. Martin.”

Emily felt a chill, “Mom, are you saying I should marry Dr. Martin so that you can save face in front of the relatives?”

Gina snapped, “Emily, what are you talking about? I’m thinking of your best interests. If you weren’t my daughter, I wouldn’t bother?”

“Then please don’t bother with me, just take care of my brother!” Emily’s voice was icy, I’ve been working all day. I’m tired. I’m hanging up now!”

And with that, the call ended.

Emily sat on the couch, staring blankly at her phone, her heart filled with sadness.

Did Gina truly care about her, or was she more concerned about maintaining the Sullivan family’s dignity?

She and Kya had been living abroad for two years, and Gina hadn’t once called to ask about her life.

The moment she came back, Gina started fretting about her marriage. Did she truly care about her?

Why was it that when she was young, her mother treated her and her brother the same, but now things were different?
