She gripped her hands tightly by her side, body tense as she stared down David.

Slowly, David began to speak.

"It was a stormy night when Emilia fell and went into premature labor. Instead of calling an ambulance, she called your dad. Being friends with Emilia, your parents rushed to her aid. But on their way there, they got into a terrible car accident and died on the spot.

And if you really want to get down to it, it was Emilia's unborn child that caused the accident. That child never should have existed, but it survived. And that child is her, Kisa."

Gilbert's body shook violently, and his pupils shrunk in horror. Memories that he had buried deep inside came flooding back in fragments.

"Aunt Emilia is having a baby. If it's a girl, will you marry her?"

"No, I want her to be my little sister. Can we go see her, Mom?"

"Sure, but whether it's a brother or sister, you need to be kind to them."

"Hurry, Emilia's in critical condition!"

The family quickly piled into the car and disappeared into the rainy night. But before long, their happy chatter and worried concerns were all crushed by a massive truck.

Pain coursed through him as if he was reliving the whole thing. His mother's weak cries and bloody embrace stabbed his heart and took his breath away. Everything was playing out cruelly in front of him, despair and fear wrapping him in a cocoon of misery. He clutched his head, his face twisted in agony.

Kisa shook her head mechanically, feeling ice cold all over.

‘This was why Gilbert's parents were dead. No wonder Madalyn always called me a cursed child, saying I shouldn't have existed. It was my fault his parents were gone. What am I supposed to do now?!

Madalyn held Gilbert tightly, her painful memories making her seem even older.

She turned to Kisa with tears in her eyes.

"It was because Carolyn told me the truth about Damon's death that I called you. I wanted to hear the truth from you, but before you could arrive, Sharon pushed me down the stairs. When I woke up, I blamed you for it. I couldn't bear the thought of Gilbert finding out the truth about his parents' death and not being able to cope. But you never understood my motives. You never did. What do I do now? My poor, sweet Gilbert!"

"I never imagined it would come to this," Kisa whispered, her body chilled to the bone.

She clung to herself, the weight of despair pressing down on her until she could barely breathe. She knew she did not even deserve to apologize.

‘Madalyn is right. I have always owed Gilbert. I have deprived him of a happy childhood and the love of his parents, and now it's all my fault. Madalyn's words rang true—in this world, I'm the one who has let Gilbert down the most. No wonder Mom hated stormy nights so much. No wonder she made me promise to protect someone named Gilbert, even if it meant sacrificing my own life. I had no idea it was Gilbert I owed all along,' Kisa cried in her mind.

David watched the three of them with satisfaction. He loved seeing them in pain. But for some reason, his heart ached with a dull throb. He took a drag on his cigarette, trying to ignore the pain.

He sneered at Gilbert. "So now you finally understand. There's nowhere left to hide. It's pretty ironic that you fell in love with the person who killed your parents and even had a child with her. If your parents resting in peace found out about this, they would roll over in their graves. And every time you look at her, you will be reminded of their tragic death. Hahaha... hahaha..."
